Q

IS- some definitions

A

Information systems (IS) is the complementary networks of hardware and software that people and organizations use to collect, filter, process, create, and distribute data.”

“Information systems are combinations of hardware, software, and telecommunications networks that people build and use to collect, create, and distribute useful data, typically in organizational settings.”

“Information systems are interrelated components working together to collect, process, store, and disseminate information to support decision making, coordination, control, analysis, and visualization in an organization.”

Information systems make it possible for firms to manage all their information, make better decisions, and improve the execution of their business processes. Information system is an integrated set of components for collecting, storing, and processing data and for providing information, knowledge, and digital products. Are used by companies to manage their operations, interact with their customers and suppliers, and compete in the marketplace

A
  1. Hardware: the part of an information system you can touch
  2. Software: set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do. Software is not tangible.
    - Two main categories: operating-system software, which makes the hardware usable (Microsoft Windows or Android), and application software, which does something useful (Excel, or Angry Birds)
  3. Data.
  4. Networking Communication.

Q

Walmart- retail link

A

One of the keys to this success was the implementation of Retail Link, a supply-chain management system

This system, unique when initially implemented in the mid-1980s, allowed Walmart’s suppliers to directly access the inventory levels and sales information of their products at any of Walmart’s more than ten thousand stores.

Using Retail Link, suppliers can analyze how well their products are selling at one or more Walmart stores, with a range of reporting options. Further, Walmart requires the suppliers to use Retail Link to manage their own inventory levels.

If a supplier feels that their products are selling out too quickly, they can use Retail Link to petition Walmart to raise the levels of inventory for their products. This has essentially allowed Walmart to “hire” thousands of product managers, all of whom have a vested interest in the products they are managing. This revolutionary approach to managing inventory has allowed Walmart to continue to drive prices down and respond to market forces quickly.

Today, Walmart continues to innovate with information technology. Using its tremendous market presence, any technology that Walmart requires its suppliers to implement immediately becomes a business standard.

A

IS refers to an entire set of information: not only the technology involved, but the people and process as well

19
Q

How does information systems impact on companies?

A

A- Is as a factor of production that can be substituted for capital and labor.

B- IT also affects the cost and quality of information and can reduce the transaction costs. According to transaction cost theory, firms economize on transaction costs, much as they do on production costs (costs such as locating and communicating with distant suppliers)

Reduce internal management costs

20
Q

Competitive forces model

A
  • new market entrants
  • suppliers
  • customers
  • substitute products
  • competitors
21
Q

Competitive forces- four recommended strategies

How to use IS fro implementing them?

A
  1. Low-cost leadership.
  2. Product differentiation.
  3. Focus on market niche.
  4. Strengthening customer and supplier intimacy.
  • Some companies focus on one of these strategies, but companies pursues several of them simultaneously.
22
Q

Low cost leadership

A

Use information systems to achieve the lowest operational costs and prices.

An efficient customer response system directly links consumer behavior to distribution and supply chains. (i.e. Wal-Mart).

23
Q

Product differentiation

A

Use information systems to produce new products and services, or greatly change the customer convenience in using your existing products and services.

Manufacturers and retailers are using information systems to create products and services customized and personalized to fit the specifications of individual customers. To offer individually tailored products or services using the same production resources as mass production is called mass customization.

24
Q

Market niche

A

Use information systems to enable a specific market focus, and serve this small target market better than competitors.

IS may support this strategy by producing and analyzing data for finely tuned sales and marketing techniques.
IS enable companies to analyze customer buying patterns, tastes, and preferences so that they efficiently design advertising and marketing campaigns to smaller target markets.

The data come from a range of sources –credit card transactions, demographic data, purchase data from checkout counter scanners at supermarkets,…, and when people access and interact with Web sites.

  • Software tools find patterns in these large pools of data.
  • Analysis drives one-to-one marketing that creates personal messages.
  • CRM features analytical capabilities for this type of intensive data analysis.
25
Q

Strengthen customer and supplier intimacy

A

Use information systems to improve linkages with suppliers and develop intimacy with customers.

  • This allows suppliers more lead time in producing goods.
  • Strong linkages to customers increase switching costs and loyalty to the firm.
