What problems was the USSR facing at the time?
- Lack of industrial growth
- Low living standards

What was the SINATRA DOCTRINE
The Soviet Union would no longer get involved in the domestic affairs of the Warsaw pact countries.
They were to reduce spending on arms and defence and withdrew from Afghanistan.
The Brezhnev Doctrine would now be dropped.
Gorbachev’s new thinking included 2 ideas:
Perestroika and Glasnost
Perestroika
Russian for reconstruction
Proposed that the Soviet state and economy should be reformed to include some of the practices that made capitalism successful.
Glasnost
Russian for openness
There should be more openness and transparency within the government - less corruption.
People should not fear the state or expressing their opinions, even if it’s opposing the government
