What is a risk assessment?
a process carried out within the workplace to review and report any potential risks
How many employees trigger the need for written policies & risk assessments?

It is a legal requirement under Health & Safety Law.
A risk assessment helps you to protect your colleagues, your clients, and any visitors to the salon.
Failure to follow procedures may result in legal action and loss of business.
What are the 5 stages of risk assessment?
Identification of potential hazards.
Assessment of potential risks associated with that hazard.
Identifying how to minimise or eliminate the risk.
The training of staff to identify and control risks.
Reviewing the risk assessment process regularly.
How do you calculate the level of risk?
Risk level = consequence of exposure x likelihood of occurrence
Consequence of exposure: Likelihood of occurrence:
1= very unlikely 1= very unlikely
2= minor injury 2= unlikely
3= moderate injury 3= possible
4=major injury 4=likely 5=injury resulting in death 5= almost certain
Level of risk: 1-3 = low risk 4-6 = medium risk 8-12 = high risk 15-25 = extremely high risk
Why must risk assessments be reported to your supervisor / employer?
They must be informed of the findings to enable them to make the necessary improvements or changes.
Once risk assessments are completed, you need to make an action plan. What must this include?
Long term actions to ensure risks are dealt with & continue to be managed.
Training needs for employees (courses or in house training for new procedures).
Regular checks to ensure current control measures continue to control risks.
Outline of staff responsibilities for maintaining and preventing hazards identified.

New products / treatments / services

When a member of staff becomes pregnant
For all manual handling tasks
Define hazard
Something which may cause harm / injury
Define risk
The likelihood of harm being caused by the hazard
What must be considered when carrying out a risk assessment?
Identify the hazard
Identify the risk - what may happen?
Identify who is at risk
Identify the level of risk (low / med / high)
Identify measures already in place to minimise / eliminate risk
Identify further control measures required to reduce risk
Identify who is responsible for implementing control measures
