Japan invaded part of northern China and the United States did nothing about it besides condemning their actions.

Hoover-Stimson Doctrine
President Hoover condemned the actions of Japan and refused to recognize territories acquired by force
Did not take direct action but was hoping that Japan would back off.
Tripartite Pact
Japan joins the Rome-Berlin axis for mutual defense and military support
Nye Committee
investigated reasons for joining WWI, believed the reasons to be corrupt
basically just looking for reasons to not join WWII
Quarantine Speech
Roosevelt spoke out against the aggression of Japan and Italy
He urged democratic countries to quarantine the aggressors with economic embargoes, but this led to criticism from isolationists who believed this tactic would lead to war
As a result of this criticism, Roosevelt backed off and sought less direct measures to address totalitarianism.
Neutrality Acts, 1935, 36, 37
Designed to keep the United States from picking a side in the conflict and to keep them out of danger
No sale of arms to countries involved, no traveling on ships of nations involved, no loaning money to belligerent countries, non-military goods purchased on cash and carry basis.

Was decided that Sudetenland would go to Germany. (appeasement)
Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact
August 1939
Hitler wanted to avoid a two-front war even though Fascists and Communists are traditionally enemies and Stalin was afraid of Hitler
They made a secret pact to divide Poland.
Invasion of Poland
Britain and France promised to help Poland if they were attacked
Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939
Britain and France declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939.

Battle of Britain
Germany bombed Britain in advance of their planned invasion but when the Royal Air Force defeated the Luftwaffe those plans were called off.
“Arsenal of Democracy” Speech

FDR said the US had to be the ‘arsenal of democracy’, basically meaning that they had to supply all the war supplies for democratic countries.
