Topic 1: Material Culture
Objects that people and/or society give value to; often connect to physical things, often stuff you can buy or wear.
Ex: Money, tools, monuments, clothing, art, etc.
Topic 1: Non-Material Culture
It consists of the ideas and/or beliefs an individual or society has, as well as shared practices, ideas, or beliefs.
Ex: Weddings, funerals, graduations, birthdays, etc.
Topic 1: Subcultures
A smaller group within a larger culture.
Ex: A school culture v. the culture for each grade level
Topic 1: Pop Culture(Modern Culture)
It originates in more developed countries or regions and diffuses through hierarchical diffusion; more diverse and changes over time.
Topic 1: Hierarchical Diffusion
The spread of ideas, trends, or innovations spread from more influential to less influential areas.
Topic 1: Folk Culture
More homogenous and diffuses through relocation diffusion; family and religion play a huge role.
Topic 1: Relocation Diffusion
Occurs when a person migrates from their home and shares their culture with a new location.
Topic 1: Indigenous Culture
Distinct social and cultural groups that share collective ancestorial ties to the lands and natural resources where they occupy, live, or have been displaced from.
Topic 1: Ethnocentrism
When a person applies their cultural standards to another culture; can cause people to look down on another culture.
Topic 1: Cultural Relativism
When a person views another culture from that culture’s perspective.
Topic 1: Practices
People may tend to have different practices related to their culture; behaviors, values, customs, that are passed down through generations.
Topic 1: Land Use
Land use can be the way land is being used for different purposes related to a culture that is being performed in and area.
Ex: Hinduism can bring more temples to an area.
Topic 1: Architecture
As society diffuses different culture and technology improves, the style of building houses may adapt to new styles(modern architecture) or try to keep their style traditional(traditional architecture).
Topic 1: Technologies
As technology advances in society, they may be more open to different culture around the world, such as their way of living, and may start to see more diffusion of different cultures through the internet and social media platforms. You may start to see more relocation and expansion diffusion occur throughout society.
Topic 1: Attitudes
In a culture, people may either tend to modify their own culture to adapt to new styles and trends, or may completely try to stay away from technologies and new cultures in order to prevent their culture form being modifying and staying true to their roots.
Topic 1: Behaviors
The different ways that people act; includes greetings and interactions within people in a society.
Ex: Koreans bow when they greet other people.
Topic 1: Cultural Traits
The cultural traits within a culture may be modified or completely lost due to diffusion of other cultures and adaptation to these other cultures being diffused from around the world.
Topic 1: Food Preferences
Even though a culture may have been modified due to other cultures, it may stay true to its own cultural food, or may completely lose that and start to eat food from other cultures or the modern food.
Topic 2: Cultural Landscapes
When observing the cultural landscape of an area, we can gain insight into how people have modified the areas to fit their needs and the cultures being practiced. This can include architecture and land usage.
Topic 2: Physical Features
These can include rivers, mountains, trees and other natural features that occur in an area. They can also include man made items such as buildings, dams, and others.
Topic 2: Agricultural and Industrial Practices
If society is more traditional and sticks with their local roots, they will be having more agricultural practices, but if it’s more developed and more technology is in play, then industrial practices are more likely to be practiced in the area.
Topic 2: Religious and Linguistic Characteristics
Religious beliefs or practices and languages spoken within a certain culture.
Topic 2: Evidence of Sequent Occupancy
Sequent occupancy is the impact people have had on a cultural landscape, such as buildings and other man-made items in the area.
Topic 2: Expressions of culture
If you look at an area, you can see the different practices, beliefs, structures and languages spoken. This can help you determine what cultures are being practiced in an area and can also help you determine where the place is.
Topic 2: Traditional architecture
Traditional architecture stays true to its roots and doesn’t really focus on function and is made of natural materials found in the area. It also incorporates the local culture into the style of the building.
Topic 2: Postmodern Architecture
It strives to create a unique look but still incorporates the local culture into the design of the building.
Topic 2: Land-Use patterns
Land can be shaped to be used for agricultural, industrial, commercial, residential, recreational and transportation purposes. This can tell us a lot about the culture in a society and what they focus more on.
Topic 3: Regional Pattern
Cultural geography, hearths, acculturation, assimilation are examples of regional patterns that can be seen.
Topic 3: Language
Different languages may be spoken within an area, but people can come together and find one common language so they can all communicate with each other.
Topic 3: Religon
There are many different religions practiced in an area which can impact the cultural landscape of an area.
Topic 3: Ethnicity
Ethnicity is where a group of people share a common identity based on shared ancestry, language, etc.. and can act as a centripetal force which brings people together.
Topic 3: Sense of Place
The strong emotional connection or perception people have of a specific geographic area.
Topic 3: Place making
The process of a community coming together and transforming a public space for different activities or events.
Topic 3: Centripetal forces
Aspects of a society that bring people together; shared history, common language, common religion, etc.
Topic 3: Centrifugal forces
Aspects of a society that drive people apart from each other; language barriers, cultural differences, etc.
