Unit 3 Topic 1 Biodiversity Flashcards
biodiversity
Qualities of a K strategist
->Carrying capacity; the limit; (survivorship curve).
->Fewer offspring that are cared for, so they reach maturity
->long life expectancy & high parental care
->stable environment
->large body size
Qualities of a r strategist
-> Positive growth rate (S curve)
-> More offspring that are not cared for and don’t often reach maturity
->short generation time (short life cycle) & early maturity
->Unstable environment
->High fecundity (fecund = very reproductive)
->Small body size
->Dispersed offspring (have wings etc. so they can easily disperse to survive)
similarities of asexual and sexual reproduction
Offspring are produced
Qualities asexual reproduction
-> Requires only one organism
-> Undergo binary fission
-> Eg. Bacteria
-> offspring are like clones
-> Reproduces quickly
Qualities of sexual reproduction
-> Eg fungi, animals
-> Uniting of 2 gametes to form a new organism
-> Have the potential to be genetically diverse
-> Gametes different to each other
-> Forms unique offspring; not clones
-> Meiosis
-> Generally more resilient to change due to genetic diversity
what is binomial nomenclature
Classifying organisms by their genus and Species written together in italics; genus capitalised, species lowercase (eg. Homo sapians)
what is the Linnean system
-> binominal naming system
-> created by Carl Linnaeus in 1700s
-> groups species in a hierarchal system
list the Linnean hierarchy in order of least specific to most specific
Domain -> Kingdom -> Phylum -> Class -> Order -> Family -> Genus -> Species
Biome definition
A distinct geographical region with specific climate, vegetation, and animal life.
-> the largest geographic biotic unit
Biome example
-> grassland
-> coniferous forest
etc.
Ecozone definition
A division of the earth’s land surface that is distinguished by the evolutionary histories and distribution patterns of its life forms
Ecoregion definition
A subdivision of an ecozone; a geographically distinct community based on geology.
-> Soils, climate, and predominant vegetation
Vertical stratification definition
The vertical arrangement of vegetation into layers (or strata), providing a variety of niches.
Microhabitats definition
A small habitat that may be different from the surrounding larger habitat.
Microhabitats example
The canopy influences humidity and effect of wind strata. Each stratum (layer) of the forest has its own set of environmental conditions and will support different life forms
