Slum
A populated area in a city with poor living conditions
Shanty
A small crudely built shelter usually of wood.
Favelas
A slum located on the outskirts of the country’s large cities, (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo)
Ghetto
An area of a city where people of a particular race/religion live closely together and apart from other people
Sustainable
Capable of being maintained at a steady level without exhausting natural resources or causing severe ecological damage
Intervene
To come between in order to stop or change
Public-Private Partnership
A partnership between the public sector and the private sector for the purpose of delivering a project
Push and Pull Factors
Push factors encourage people to leave their points of origin and settle elsewhere
Pull factors attract migrants to new areas.
Eco-city
A settlement modeled on the self-sustaining resilient structure and function of natural ecosystems
Urban Stress
A state of mental tension developed through city living
Urban Deprivation
A tool to study the geographic concentration of deprivation in different neighborhoods of a city.

The increase of people moving from rural to urban areas
Informal Economy
Activities that have market value but are not formally registered
Urban Revitalisation
The rehabilitation of city areas by renovating/replacing old buildings with new housing
