Psychology
the scientific study of the mind and behavior
Behavioural
The study of the connection between our minds and our behavior
Cognitive
The mental process involved in knowing, learning, and understanding things.
Conformity
The tendency for an individual to align their attitudes and beliefs with those of the people around them.
Obedience
Acting on the orders of an authority figure.
Autonomous state
Individuals are seen as personally responsible for their actions.
Agentic state
An individual giving up their moral responsibility to an authority figure.
Moral strain
A state of mental discomfort or anxiety experienced in the agentic state when a person’s actions conflict with their personal morality.
Situational factors
External influence which can impact a persons life.
Prejudice
Negative attitude toward another person or group formed in advance of any experience with said group.
Discrimination
Prejudicial treatment of people and groups based on characteristics (Rage, gender, sex)
Social identity theory
To explain how individuals create and define their place in society
Nature v. nurture
Describes how much a person’s characteristics are formed by either “nature” or “nurture.”
Nature: biological factors (namely genetics),
Nurture” can refer to upbringing/life experience more generally
Tyranny
A government in which all power is in the hands of a single ruler
Pyramid of hate
A visual representation of how bias can lead to violence
5 levels: Bias, individual acts of prejudice, discrimination, violence, genocide
