Social Structure
the network of interelated statuses and roles that guide human interaction
Status
a socially define position in a group or in a society
role
the behavior, the rights, and obligations expected of someone occupying a particular status
Ascribed status
a status assigned according to qualities beyond a persons control
Achieved status
a status achieved by an individual on the basis of some special skill, knowledge or ability
Master status
status that plays the greatest role in shaping a persons life and determining his or her social identity
Reciprocal roles
corresponding roles that define the patterns of interaction between related statuses
role expectations
socially determined behaviors expected of a persons performing role
role performance
actual behavior of a person performing a role
role set
the different roles attached to a single status
role conflict
situation that occurs when fulfilling the expectations of one role makes it difficult to fufill the expectations of another role
role strain
a situation when a person has difficulty meeting the requirments of just one role
social instituions
system of statuses, roles, and values that is organized to satisfy one or more of the basic need of society
exchange
individual, group or societal interation undertaken in an effort to receive or award in return for actions
reciprocity
the idea that if you do something for someone, you get something in return
exchange theory
the theory that holds that people motivated by self interest by their interactions with people
competition
interaction that occurs when two or more persons or groups oppose each other to achieve a goal that only one can attain
conflict
Deliberate attempt to oppose, harm, control
by force or resist the will of another person
or persons
cooperation
When two or more people or
groups work together to achieve a
goal that will benefit more than
one person,
accomadation
State of balance between
cooperation and conflict
