the beliefs, behaviors, and values shared by a group
Material culture
physical objects of a group
Nonmaterial culture
non-physical objects of a group
Society
a group that shares a common culture
Values
beliefs that are considered good or bad by a certain group
Norms
shared rules of behavior/conduct of a certain group
Folkways
norms that have socially acceptable behavior but without great consequences
Mores
norms that have socially acceptable behavior but with great consequences
Taboo
a very serious action that one commits that is prohibited or outlawed by a culture
Cultural universals
features that share a common to all cultures
Subcultures
groups that share a common culture that the whole population of society does not exhibit
Counter culture
when a subculture challenges the larger society/culture for certain reasons
Ethnocentrism
the tendency that ones culture is superior to other cultures
Cultural relativism
to attempt to understand the perspective of other cultures
Cultural diffusion
the spreading of cultural traits from one culture to another
