Unit 3 - Short Term Memory and Working Memory Flashcards
Short term memory
30 second info storage; the capacity to store small amounts of info over brief intervals passively
Memory Span
the longest number of items that can be recalled after initially experiencing them
Trace Decay
A theory saying the memories become less available over time; less times rehearsing them, memories will fade
Interference
when new info blocks the info that was previously memorized. Interferes with your ability to recall the target info
Articulatory Rehearsal
repeat words in mind in terms of the way they sound/sound-based; explains how info is retained for longer period in STM
Corsi Task
You remember the order blocks were marked, then mark them in that order. Looks at visuospatial working memory
Visual Span Task
limited resources serves as an environmental navigation/a mental map that naviagates up to go someplace
Working memory
the processing of info previously stored in memory, simultaneously storing and manipulating info, similar interval as short term memory
Phonological Loop
component of working memory; temporarily stores verbal, or speech info, and processes it
Visuo-spatial sketchpad
handles visual and spatial info, and is involved in creating images in the mind such as when you imagine your campus
Central Executive
Coordinates info b/t phonological loop and visuo-spatial sketchpad
Action control
inhibition (stop self form giving automatic response)
Perserveration
repeatedly performing the same action or mistake because the brain can’t stop the automatic behaviour (frontal lobe)
Utilization behaviours
disorder, where individuals take something in front of them and use it accordingly, even if it’s not theirs or it’s at the wrong time
N back
Measures working memory
