What is quality of life?
Definition: a measure of personal and collective well-being
What is the constitution?
The highest law system in Canada originally made in 1867
What is the Charter?
A form of constitutional protection for individual rights and freedoms, originally amended in 1982, when 2/3 of the province’s agreed to amend it.
What are some of the fundamental freedoms in the Charter?
- Express your opinions peacefully
- Choose your religion
- Organize peaceful meetings
- Associate with any person/group
What are some individual rights in the Charter?
- Democratic: right to vote in election for HOC members every 5 years
- Mobility: right to leave, enter and remain in Canada, residency in provinces
- Legal: right to life, liberty, and security against unreasonable search and seizure/unfair detainment, right of informed reason for arrest
- Equality: Equality before the law, and equal protection without discrimination
What is the Indian Act?
Indian Act (1876) was an agreement for land and citizenship status between the government and Indigenous groups. It was passed by Europeans with a superiority complex, and it limits the rights/freedoms of Indigenous people to this day.
What restrictions did the Indian Act provide for Indigenous people throughout history?
It made the Indigenous ask permission to wear traditional garments, banned traditional ceremonies, prevented political action, and residential schools.
What is women’s suffrage?
The process to get women’s right to vote, began in 1876 and gained the right to vote in 1918
What is the Anti-Terrorism Act?
An act adopted by the parliament following the events of 9/11, ensuring border and travel security.
