architect’s scale
Device that can be used to measure distances on a drawing by matching the drawing scale to the appropriate scale listed on the instrument.
centimeter (cm)
Unit of length measurement used in the metric system. One inch is the same length as 2.54 centimeters.
engineer’s scale
Measuring device typically used on civil drawings such as site plans and highway projects. Engineer’s scales are referred to in whole numbers and are related to so many feet per inch.
fractional rule
A ruler that is divided into feet, inches, and fractional parts of an inch.
full-divided scale
A scale in which the main units along the entire length of the scale are subdivided.
meter (m)
Metric unit of measurement, equal to 39.37”.
metric rule
A ruler that is divided into meters, centimeters, and millimeters.
metric scale
Scale graduated in millimeters and centimeters.
millimeter (mm)
A measuring unit in the metric system equal to 1/1000 meter.
open-divided scale
A scale with whole number units along the length of the scale and subdivisions at the end representing fractional parts of the whole number unit.
scale
A measuring device with graduations for laying off distances. Also: the ratio of size that a structure is drawn, such as: 1/4” = 1’-0”.
