Unit 3 - Periodic Table: GROUP 7 THE HALOGENS Flashcards
1
Q
WHEN GOING DOWN GROUP 7, IT IS THE OPPOSITE TO GOING DOWN GROUP 1
so: when going down group 7 the metals have what properties?
A
- Less reactive (because its harder to gain an extra electron because the outer shell is further form the nucleus)
- Higher melting and boiling points
2
Q
What are the halogens?
A
All non-metals with coloured vapours
3
Q
What is flourine? (reactivity, colour, form)
A
Very reactive, poisoness yellow gas
4
Q
What is chlorine? (reactivity, colour, form)
A
Fairly reactive, poisoness dense green gas
5
Q
What is bromine? (reacivity, colour, form)
A
Dense, poisoness red-brown volatile liquid
6
Q
What is iodine (colours in certain forms)
A
Dark grey crystalline solid
Purple vapour
7
Q
How do they all exist?
A
As molecules (aka pair of atoms)
8
Q
What will more reactive halogens do?
A
Displace less reactive ones from an aqueous solution of its salt
