What does the term purpose refer to?
Every design has a reason or a purpose.
Examples of purposes might include, but are not limited to: to influence, educate, inform, identify, guide, depict, promote
DIGAPIT
Can a design have more than one purpose?
yes
what are the three standard type conventions used to analyze type?
kerning - changing one letter
tracking - whole word
leading - lines of type
What does type communicate?
emotions, meanings and messages
what is a sans serif type?
modern, no tails , found on screens
what is a serif type?
traditional, found in prints, has tails
What are the benefits of Visual Language in Design?
Consistency
Strong brand identity
Effective connection with the audience
What are the three conditions that are required for VL to work?
Symbolic system
Common ground of knowledge shared by the sender and receiver.
Cooperative Principle
Define the term Visual Language
Visual Language is used to persuade audiences an influences opinions
What are the Components of Visual Language
elements, principles, type, materials, methods and media
What power does Visual Language in a VC?
Promoting
Persuading
Influencing
Provoking emotional response
How can visual language communicate to audiences and shape behaviors?
shock
power
Patriotism
What does the term aesthetics refer to?
The way the design looks
what does the term function refer to?
Way the design works
What does offset printing refer to?
cost effective
mass production
high resolution
CMYK colors
Can print at any scale
Can print on any material
what are the design elements?
line, shape, color, tone, texture, type, form, point
what are the design principles?
cropping, hierarchy, scale, proportion, balance, pattern
what are influencing factors?
Technological, economic, cultural, social or environmental factors all impact on design decisions that are made
A factor is a designer’s decision
A designer makes a decision in response to a factor
what are some environmental design decisions?
Environmental influences on design
Minimises the impact on our planet
Thinking about the resources that we waste in the production of design
Being more environmentally friendly include:
Limitation on raw material = reduce the amount of resources we extract from the environment = can crate lower weight of products = lower transportation costs
Reduced energy by designing products that conserve energy
Designing products that have a longer life cycle = can be repaired or put to another use
Using materials that can be recycled
What are some examples of social decisions on design?
Designs can be influenced by behaviours can interactions between people.
In COVID = social distancing = design was used to assist people in staying connected but also remaining safe through the way designs were created.
Example of this is through pavement stickers informed safe distance between people
What are some economics design decisions examples?
Undertaking a design process is expensive
A client will have a budget that the designer needs to work in = this is outlined at the start of the project in the design brief
Financial costs include = nature and quality of materials
Production costs of how the design is going to be made
Transport and assembly of the design can also cost
Cutting costs can result in lesser quality
what are some examples of cultural factors on design?
Culture can be defined as common ideas, customs and social behaviours of people and society
As a designer having empathy for the culture you are designing for is highly important
Cultural norms impacts and influence how people cultures interpretate designs being good designs
Language, location, customs, education, religion, politics, values of community, trends in fashion, art music all impact
Colour can be used as powerful tool – for example: red can be used safety and medical support all around the world where as green can be associated with the environment
What are some examples of technology factors on design?
Technology can assist us in the design process and can make products more human centred in design
3D modelling programs = allow us to make a higher quality design and allow the designer to move through the design process quicker and gain feedback from stakeholders
Protypes can be easily created and printed
Designers can use software to model the behaviour of the designs in different contexts for client to gain a deeper understanding of the design
How can behavior’s and interactions influence design?
Behaviours :
Fashion design can influence trends on what we wear
If a cup is well designed a person is more likely to use this compared to a takeaway cup
Interactions:
Engaging playground equipment can draw families and children to interact with the environment
What are the gestalt principles?
proximity, continuity, similarity, closure, common fate, figure-ground and focal point.
Explain the gestalt principle of Proximity
Elements arranged close to each other are perceived as more related than those placed further apart.
\
Explain the Gestalt principle of common region
Similarly to the Proximity principle, elements placed within the same region are perceived as grouped.
Explain the gestalt principle of similarity
Elements sharing similar visual characteristics are perceived to be more related than those not sharing similar characteristics.
Explain the gestalt principle of closure
A group of elements are often perceived to be a single recognizable form or figure. The Closure also occurs when an object is incomplete, or parts of it are not enclosed.
Explain the gestalt principle of symmetry
Symmetrical elements tend to perceived as belonging together regardless of their distance, giving us a feeling of solidity and order
Explain the gestalt principle of Continuation
Elements arranged in a line or a soft curve are perceived to be more related than those arranged randomly or in a harsh line.
Explain the gestalt principle of common fate
Elements moving towards the same direction are perceived as more related than those moving in different directions, or not moving at all.
The use of visual language can communicate a tone manner. Identify 3 different types
humor
shock
Patriotism
