The region between the Tigris and Euphrates river; birthplace of the Sumerian and Babylonian civilizations

light soil in rivers that is moisture retentive soil type with a high fertility rating
Silt
a legacy that consists of canals, artificial lakes and gates. It allowed farmers to expand their fields and bring water to their crops.
City State
An independant, self governing, city and the lands\villages around it
Polytheism
to believe in many gods and goddesses

a religious temple in Mesopotamia
Sargon
C. 2300 B.C united Sumer creating the first Empire. He became the first emperor and expanded his empire north
Code of law
a written set of laws that apply to everyone under a government
Economy
the way people manage money and resources for the production of goods and services
Social structure
divisions within a society and culture
