what is cohabitation?
living together without being married
what is marriage?
a man and woman legally joined so they are allowed to live together and usually have children.
what is faithfulness?
staying with your marriage partner and only having sex with them.
what is pre-marital sex?
sex before marriage
what is promiscuity?
having sex with several partners when not wanting a relationship
what is adultery?
a married person having sex with someone who is not their married partner
what is divorce?
the legal ending of a marriage
what is remarriage?
marrying again after being divorced
what is a nuclear family?
a mother, father and their biological children living as one family unit
what is extended family?
grandparents/aunts/uncles having high amounts of contact with the mother, father and children.
what is a reconstituted family?
where two sets of children become a family as their divorced parents marry.
why is divorce becoming more common?
it is cheaper and easier to divorce and woman do not put up with their husbands treating them badly
why is cohabitation more acceptable in society?
the media show it as a positive thing and contraception means there is often sex before marriage
why is homosexuality more accepted in society?
new laws in place to protect gay rights, there are also gay celebrities in the media
why do most christians think sex should only happen in marriage?
church leaders say it is a sin, the bible condemns it.
why do liberal protestants think sex before marriage is acceptable?
the church has come to terms with new attitudes, jesus taught love is the most important thing and the bible doesn’t specifically condemn it
what do christians think about adultery?
it is always wrong, breaks the 7th commandment
what do christians think the purpose of marriage is?
sex, children, create a christian family, for comfort and companionship
what are the main features of a christian wedding?
exchange of vows, exchange of rings blessed by god,prayers and bible readings
explain catholic attitudes to divorce
divorce is not acceptable, jesus banned it. they also cannot divorce due to God not approving
what a protestant attitudes to divorce?
it may be the lesser of two evils, god will forgive if the people live a new life.
what are christians attitudes to the roles of parents?
should love their children and provide for them. male and female role model
how should children treat parents? (christian view)
should look after parents and look after them if they can no longer look after themselves
how does the Church help with family life?
run schools that teach the national curriculum and sunday schools, run services to bring families together
