Unit 3 lesson 1 Flashcards
Vascular plants have tubes that do what?
That carry water and nutrients through the plant
work like a straw to move water and minerals and sugars through plants
What are roots
A part of the plant that is usually underground and absorbs water and minerals from the soil
What do roots do?
They take in water and minerals and also anchor the plant in the ground.
What are the 2 types of roots?
The fibrous roots and the taproots
What are stems?
Stems hold up the plants leaves which make food for that plant
HAVE TUBES TO CARRY WATER SUGAR AND MINERALS TO DIFFERENT PART OF PLANTS
What do stems support?
The stems help the leaves to make food
SUPPORT THE PLANT
Where do stems grow?
Out of the seed
GROW ABOVE GROUND_ BUT SOME GROW UNDER GROUND
What are the different types of stems?
1trunk
2 woody stems
3soft green stems
DO vascular plants have leaves?
Sí
What are leaves?
Leaves are plant parts that use sunlight to produce. Sugar for the plants food
Do leaves come in many shapes and sizes?
Give examples?
YES
Long, short, wide, narrow, smooth, rough, shiny, or dull
What are the different textures of leaves?
1 fuzzy
2 smooth and waxy
How do different textures protect plants?
The hairs and wax keep the plant from drying
WHat do veins do in leaves?
1carry food and water into the plant
2carry minerals through the leaves
What is the process called that plants use to make food?
Photosynthesis
Explain what happens during photosynthesis.
During photosynthesis plants use energy from the sun to change carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen
Where does photosynthesis take place?
In the leaves of the plant.
What is chlorophyll?
Chlorophyll is what make the leaves green.
What gas do plants get from air?
Carbon Dioxide
What gas do plants give off?
Oxygen
Where do the two gases move through in the plant?
Move through small openings in a plants leaves.
What are fibrous roots?
thin bracnching roots that grow close to the surface— grass and most trees have fibrous roots
what are taproots?
are think strong roots that grow deep in soil- some plants use taproots to store food- ex carrot or beet
What are the 2 types of groups of plants?
Non Vascular and Vascular
What are non vascular plants?
simpliest plant- grow close to ground soak up water and minerals like sponge
what do “roots “ in non vascular plants do?
anchor plant to ground
DO Non vascular plants have stems or leaves?
no- they have a stalk which leaflike structures grow
What are the plant types you see the most?
vascular
What parts do vascular plants have?
system of tubes that run through roots, stems and leaves
what kind of plant is a rosebush or magnolia tree?
vascular plant
Can vascular plants have reproductive structures called cones?
yes - a pine tree
