Unit 3 Keywords Flashcards
analyte
a substance whose chemical constituents are being identified and measured.
binary acids
acids composed of two atoms, a hydrogen element and a nonmetal element
coefficient
A whole number placed in front of a chemical formula to tell the reader how many copies of that molecule are needed to balance the equation.
empirical formula
the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms present in a compound (represents the relative proportions of each element within a molecule, not the total number of atoms in a molecule)
formula unit
the smallest unit of a non-molecular substance (could be an atom , a molecule, or an ionic compound)
molar mass
a mass in grams that contains one mole/formula mass in grams
oxyacid
an acid made by combining hydrogen, a non-metal, and oxygen, usually found as hydrogen and a polyatomic ion
percent composition
the percent by mass of each element found in a chemical compound
polyatomic
An ion composed of more than one atom
salt
an ionic compound composed of positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions), resulting in a neutral compound with no net electric charge
