define the term symbiosis?
Symbiosis is co-evolved intimate relationships between two members of different species
What are the two types of Symbiotic relationships?
- parasitism
- mutualism
describe the features of a parasitic relationship?
In a parasitic relationship the parasite benefits in terms of energy from resources obtained from the host and the host is harmed by the loss of these resources.
Parasites often have a limited metabolism and cannot survive outside of their hosts. However some parasites have intermediate secondary hosts to allow them to complete their life cycle
What are the methods of transmission of parasites?
Parasites can be transmitted by
- Vectors
- Resistant stages
- Direct contact
Describe the features of a mutualistic relationship?
In a mutualistic relationship both partner species benefit in an independant relationship.
