Unit 3? Ish Flashcards
What are the three spectrums?
Emission (specific lines for elements)
Continuous ( full rainbow)
Absorption ( similar to emission but shadows)
What is absorbed/released in elections to allow it to just from one valance shell to another?
Photons
What causes light?
The transition from one valance shell to another (ultraviolet lights)
What do electron vibrations create?
Inferred lines
What do rotational traditions create?
Radio waves
What is a spin flip transition?
When the electron and proton have similar rotations but then the electron releases a photon and start to rotate the opposite way.
What info can we get from spectral lines?
Chemical compounds
Temperature
Radial velocity
In reference to the Doppler effect how do the wavelengths differ due to the direction that you are traveling?
If you are moving toward a source of radiation the wavelengths seem shorter and if you are moving away from the source of radiation the wavelengths seem longer.
What are some cause of the broadening of spectral lines?
The Doppler shift
And rotation of an abject
What are some reasons mirrors are better than lenses in a telescope?
- Lens can only be supported by edge
- a lens need 2 good surfaces
- some light is absorbed by lens.
What improved detail when using a telescope
Light gathering power
What is resolving power?
When a better telescope can distinguish objects that are closer together
Resolution is?
Proportional to wavelength and inversely proportional to size.
What causes atmospheric blurring?
Air movements and water vapour
Brightness is proportional to what?
The square radius of the mirror
