Unit 3- Invesrigative Biology Flashcards
Scientific cycle
Observation -> Hypothesis-> experiment design -> gathering, recording analysis of data -> analyse data -> conclusion -> revise hypothesis.
Describe the null hypothesis
A statement which proposes that there will be no statistically significant effect as a result of the experiment treatment.
Describe peer review.
Any published data should be peer reviewed and critically evaluated by specialists who are experts in the revealing field.
What concepts are needed for human studies?
Informed consent: participant is fully aware of the treatment.
Right to withdraw
Confidentiality: any data shouldn’t identify the subject.
Validity
Variables controlled so that any measured effect is likely to be due to the independent variable.
Reliability
Consistent values are achieved in repeats and independent replications.
