What is Homeostasis?

A

Homeostasis is the process by which organisms keep the internal environment of their body stable even if the external environment changes.

What is a stimulus?

A

A stimulus is something that activates a feedback mechanism. There can be positive and negative stimuli, and these activate positive and negative feedback mechanisms respectively

What are feedback mechanisms?

A

Feedback mechanisms are put in place to respond to stimuli. A positive feedback mechanism responds to positive stimuli and a negative feedback mechanism responds to negative stimuli (Never would have guessed)

What is an example of a positive stimulus and feedback mechanism?

A

If a puppy catches a ball while playing fetch, praising it would be a positive stimulus. Due to the positive stimulus, the positive feedback mechanism would result in the action likely being repeated. Because the action is repeated, the positive stimulus (praise) will be used more often, which is why its a positive stimulus and feedback mechanism (Im sorry I suck at explaining this pls go to the PDF that Ms Dufault gave us)

What is an example of a negative stimulus and feedback mechanism?

A

If a puppy urinates on the coach, and you discourage it from doing that again by not giving it treats or something idk, then that is a negative stimulus. This would result in a negative feedback mechanism, causing the puppy to be less likely to do this again. Because it is less likely to do it again, you won’t punish it again, meaning the negative feedback mechanism reduced the negative stimulus, which is why its a negative stimulus and feedback mechanism (Im sorry I suck at explaining this pls go to the PDF that Ms Dufault gave us)
