What is an environmental hazard
Worn or damaged equipment, furniture and flooring can cause slip and trip hazards resulting in sprains, buising or fractures, or in being knocked unconscious
What are biological hazards
Biological hazards are medical or other waste products not disposed of following correct procedures and poor levels of hygiene can result in the spread of infection and diseases
What are chemical hazards
Chemical hazards include medicine- incorrect dose administrated, wrong medication, unauthorised access to medication can have serious health consequences
Cleaning materials- incorrectly stored or used can cause serious physical harm
Paychological hazards
Psychological hazards include stress and fatigue- due to long working hours, coping with challenging behaviour, violence, abuse from service users; bullying in the workplace
Musculoskeletal hazards are
Musculoskeletal hazards including manual handling of equipment, patients and residents can cause back or muscle injuries if not carried out correctly following procedures
Display screen equipment (dse) - incorrect posture or badly positioned screen when using a computer can cause muscle aches and pains and repetitive stress injuries (rs)
What are working conditions hazard
Working conditions incluce temperature- worplace too hot or cold can cause dehydration and exacerbate conditions such as asthma
Noise levels too high can have long term effects on hearing
Travel- long distance, traffic, being away from home often causing stress and tiredness
What are working practice hazard
Working practices include excessive working hours which can result in tiredness or lack of concentration, leading to mistakes and accidents
Lack of supervision for new staff or those taking on new tasks- training and supervision are needed to avoid accidents and injuries eg- using a hoist incorrectly could cause serious physical injury for a patient and the staff
Lack of security systems as a hazard
Lack of security systems include door locks, alarm systems and monitoring of visitors all prevent unauthorised access by strangers who may pose a threat of harm for individuals in care environments; security may not be in place or mah be faulty due to poor maintenance
What is manual handling
Manual handling is using the correct procedures when physically moving any load by lifting, putting down, pushing or pulling
What does a red sign mean
Red signs indicate danger. This is a prohibition sign that states what you cannot do
What do yellow signs mean
Yellow signs are warning signs. This indicates that you must be careful and take precautions
What do blue warning signs mean
Blue warning signs are a mandatory sign. This states that yoy must do something
What do green signs mean
Green signs indicates safe conditions and provides information about safe conditions
