Birth rate
The number of births in a country for every 1000 people in the population
Death rate
The number of deaths in a country for every 1000 people in the population
Natural increase
The difference between a countrys birth rate and death rate
Immigration rate
Measures the number of people who move to a country
Emigration rate
Measures the number of people who move out of a country
Net migration rate
The difference between a countrys immigration rate and emigration rate
Population growth rate
Combines natural increase and net migration rate to calculate the rate at which a countrys population is changing (usually in percent)
Infant mortality rate
The probability of a child born in a specific year dying before they are 1 year old
GDP per capita
Calculated by dividing total GDP (gross domestic product) of a country by its total population
Median age
The age at which half the population is half older, half younger
Literacy rate
The percent of a population of a given age that can read and write

Population size, density, sex ratio, dependency ratio
How do you calculate birth rate?
By dividing the number of live births in a population in a year by the midyear resident population
How do you calculate net migration rate?
By the number of immigrants minus the number of emigrants divided by the persons years
