Unit 3 - Equilibrium Flashcards
Define dynamic equilibrium
When the rate of forward reaction equals the rate of backwards reaction
At dynamic equilibrium, concentrations of reactants and products ___ ____
Stay constant
What is Le Chatelier’s Principle?
The position of equilibrium moves to oppose any change
What happens if you increase the concentration of a reactant in a reaction at equilibrium?
Equilibrium will move to undo the change. Forward reaction will speed up and equilibrium will move to the right
What happens if you increase the concentration of a product in a reaction at equilibrium?
Equilibrium will move to undo the change. Reverse reaction will speed up and equilibrium will move to the left
What happens if you increase the pressure of a reaction at equilibrium?
Equilibrium will move to undo the change. Will move to whichever side has less moles of gas
What happens if you increase the temperature of a reaction at equilibrium?
Equilibrium will try to undo the change. Will move to the endothermic side of the reaction
What happens if you decrease the temperature of a reaction at equilibrium?
Equilibrium will try to undo the change. Will move to the exothermic side of the reaction
What effect will a catalyst have on an equilibrium?
Both forward and backwards reactions are effected. Equilibrium position is not changed BUT equilibrium state will be reached faster
What happens if you decrease the pressure of a reaction at equilibrium?
The equilibrium will move to undo the change and will move to the side with more moles of gas
What happens to an equilibrium if both reactants and products have 2 moles of gas and the pressure is changed?
Nothing will happen - equilibrium will not change
