Unit 3: Electron Configuration Flashcards
Speed of light(c)
3.0x10^8
What does an upwards arrow represent?
An electron spinning clockwise
What does a downwards arrow represent?
Electron spinning counter clockwise
Aufbau Principle
Electrons fill the lowest energy level first
Pauli Exclusion Principal
No two electrons can occupy the same energy level and orbital unless they are spinning opposite directions
Hund’s Rule
Electrons pull spread out over the orbitals in the same shape before pairing themselves up
Planck’s Constant (h)
6.63x10^-34
No two electrons can occupy the same energy level and orbital unless they are spinning opposite directions
Pauli Exclusion Principle
Electrons pull spread out over the orbitals in the same shape before pairing themselves up
Hund’s Rule
Electrons fill the lowest energy level first
Aufbau’s Principle
Atomic radius trend
Atomic radius increases as you go to the left because the force acting on the element is less meaning it’s more spread out
What direction does ionization energy increases, left or right and why?
It increases as you move right because the atomic radius decreases meaning more nuclear force acting on it thus making it harder to remove an electron
