Unit 3 definitions Flashcards
Nutrient
A nutrient is a substance in food that is used by the body to promote normal growth, maintenance, and repair
Macromolecules
Large complex organic around carbon which form the basis for all living functions
Major nutrients
Nutrients in which you need a lot of. Example carbs, lipids, and proteins
Chemical reaction
A process leading to chemical changes in matter
Reactants
Starting materials
Products
Resulting elements, molecules and compounds
Dehydration synthesis
Process used to link monomers together to form polymers
Hydrolysis
Used to break down polymers into their component monomers
Starch
Energy in plants that humans can eat
Glycogen
It is the starch in animals and it is how animals store energy. It is located in the liver/ muscle cells
Cellulose
It is a very long chain of carbohydrates that are very strong. Molecules that make up the cell wall
Vitamin
They are organic nutrients of various forms that the body requires in a small amount
Homeostasis
The regulation of an organism internal environment to maintain conditions for life
Saturated fat
Contains max number of hydrogen atoms
Unsaturated fats
Contains less than the max number of hydrogen atoms
