Unit 3 Common FRQ Terms Flashcards
retinal disparity
cue using both eyes used to percieve distance between two objects
difference threshold
the smallest amount by which two stimuli can be distinguished from each other
selective attention
allows an individual to focus on one thing and block out others
sensory adaptation
senses adapt to different stimuli (for example when you step into a dark room your eyes will eventually adjust)
color blindness
the inability to discriminate between colors and to perceive color hues
absolute threshold
smallest amount of stimulation needed for a person to detect that stimulus 50% of the time
basilar membrane
in your ear, vibrates to separate incoming sounds to frequencies that activate different cochlear regions
inattentional blindness
not seeing something as a result of not paying attention to it
rods
give us vision in low light
proximity
the tendency to organize objects close to each other into a single entity
fovea
place in the eye where most cones are located
feature detectors
allow us to distinguish between types of stimuli
closure (Gestalt)
people fill in the blanks to complete an object when the actual object appears to be a part of it
cocktail party effect
the ability to focus on one thing and block out others
figure ground
ability to differentiate an object from it’s background
