Unit 3 Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What is a polyatmomic ion?
An ion made up of more than one atom that acts as a single particle
What is the definition of the pH scale?
pH scale: A numerical scale ranging from 0 to 14 that is used to compare the acidity of solutions.
What is the definition of neutral?
Neutral: neither acidic or basic; with a pH of 7.
What is pH?
pH is a measure of how acidic or basic a solution is.
What is an acid-base indicator?
An acid-base indicator is a substance that changes colour depending on whether it is an acid or a base.
What is a product
A product is a chemical that is produced during a chemical reaction
What is a double displacement reaction?
A reaction that occurs when elements in different compounds displace each other or exchange places, producing two new compounds
What is a single displacement reaction?
A reaction in which an element displaces another element in a compound, producing a new compound and a new element
What are noble gases?
Elements in the 18th column of the periodic table.
What is a compound?
A pure substance composed of two or more elements in a fixed ratio.
What is an ion?
An ion is a particle that results when an atom gains or loses one or more electrons.
What is the difference between a cation and an anion?
A cation is a positively charged ion, and anion is a negatively charged ion.
What is the law of conservation of mass
The law of conservation of mass is the statement that, in any given chemical reaction, the total mass of the reactants equals the total mass of the products
What is a covalent bond?
A bond that results from sharing outer electrons between non metals
What is a Molecule?
A molecule is a particle in which atoms are joined by covalent bonds.
