Unit 3: Chemical Composition Flashcards
What is an element?
An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into two or more simpler substances by chemical means. (Elements are the basic building blocks of all living and non-living matter.)
What is a compound?
A compound is a substance made when two or more different elements are chemically combined together. They have properties different from those of their constituent elements.
What is a mixture?
A mixture consists of two or more substances that are not chemically combined together. They display characteristics of their constituents.
What are the factors affecting solubility?
Type of solute (diff solutes have diff solubilities), type of solvent (diff solvents have diff solubilities), temperature (for solids and liquids, solubility increases with increasing temperatures; for gases, solubility decreases with increasing temperatures)
What’s a solute and a solvent?
Solute dissolves in solvent.
What’s a solution?
A solution is a mixture consisting of particles of two or more substances that are distributed evenly throughout.
What’s a suspension?
A suspension is a mixture containing insoluble solid particles suspended in a medium such as air or water.
What is solubility?
Solubility is the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a fixed amount of solvent at a certain fixed temperature.
What are the factors affecting rate of dissolving?
Rate of stirring (rate of dissolving increases when rate of stirring increases), size of solute particles (rate of dissolving increases when size of solute particles increases), and temperature (rate of dissolving increases when temperature increases).
