Unit 3: Chemical Bonding Flashcards
Why do atoms form bonds?
To satisfy the Octet Rule
What types of elements are involved in an ionic bond?
A metal and a nonmetal
What types of elements are involved in a covalent bond?
2 or more non-metals
What types of elements are involved in a metallic bond?
2 or more metals
What structure does an ionic bond form?
Crystal lattice structure
What structure does a covalent bond form?
Lewis dot diagram
What structure does a metallic bond form?
Electron sea model
Electronegativity
measure of how strongly an atom pulls on or attracts electrons
Bond polarity
the distribution of electrical charges between atoms
What is the difference between polar and non polar bonds?
Polar bonds have electrons that are not shared equally where non-polar bonds have equally shared electrons
What is an alloy?
formed from two or more different metals
What is an example of an alloy?
copper+zinc= brass
iron+carbon= steel
What is the difference between an atom and a molecule?
An atom is the smallest unit of life that retains properties of an element, and a molecule is a chemical substance that is composed of 2 or more atoms bonded together
What is a compound?
type of molecule composed of 2 or more DIFFERENT atoms bonded together
