Coping Flexibility
an individual’s ability to adjust or change their coping strategies depending on the unique and changing demands of a stressor.
High Coping Flexibility
- High coping flexibility is being able to readily adjust coping strategies if a particular strategy is proving to be ineffective
- Typically, a good fit between the coping strategies used, and the specific situational demands
- Tend to use different types of coping strategies across a variety of stressful situations
Low Coping Flexibility
- Low coping flexibility is the difficulty in adjusting or adapting a coping strategy to suit the stressful situation
- Consistent use of the same type of coping strategies across different stressful situations.
- Persist with coping strategies despite ineffectiveness.
- Approach coping in much the same way, almost habitually
Approach Strategies
are coping strategies that directly confront the source of the stress and thus reduce or eliminate it. These strategies generally deal with stress in a practical way
Avoidance Strategies
coping strategies that involve evading or distancing oneself from the source of stress. These strategies often deal with the more emotional components of stress, channeling thoughts and behavior away from the stressor
