Unit 3 Flashcards
Concentration
The number of moles of solute in a given volume of solvent
Effect of temperature on the rate of a reaction
As temperature increases, rate increases because more particles have enough energy to react
Effect of surface area on the rate of reaction
As surface area increases, rate increases because there are more sites for collisions between particles
Rate of Reaction
The change in concentration of a reactant or product per unit time
Reactant
A substance used up in a reaction
Product
A substance produced in a chemical reaction
Collision Theory
For particles to react, they must collide with each other with enough energy
Activation Energy
The minimum energy required for colliding particles to react
Effect of concentration/pressure on rate of reaction
As concentration increases, rate increases because there are more particles in a certain volume
Effect of a catalyst on the rate of a reaction
The catalyst increases the rate by decreasing the activation energy
