Anthropomorphic Language
language that speaks of God in human terms (for example, “the arm of God”)
Agnostic
a person who holds that the existence of God, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience
Aseity
the attribute of God’s independence or sel-existence. God is not dependent on anything else for existence and has eternally existed
Atheism
system of belief that asserts that there is no God. In addition, it affirms that the only form of existence is the material universe and that the universe is merely the product of chance or fate
Communicable Attributes
attributes of God that He shares with us. (Example-knowledge, mercy, justice)
Deism
the view that God is distant and created the universe, but left it to run on its own course
Immutability
refers to God’s unchangeable nature
Incommunicable Attributes
aspects of God’s character that God does not share with us (Examples-God’s eternity, God’s immutability, God’s omnipresence)
Omnipotence
the doctrine that God is able to do all his holly will; all-powerful
Omnipresence
the doctrine that God does not have size or spatial dimensions and is present at every point of space with his whole being, yet God acts differently in different places
Omniscience
the doctrine that God fully knows himself and all things actual and possible in one simple and eternal act
Pantheism
the idea that the whole universe is God or part of God
Sovereignty
God’s exercise of power over His Creation
Theopany
an “appearance of God” in which he takes on a visible form to show himself to people
