Civil liberties
rights listed in the Constitution
Civil rights
rights that are fought for. Rights denied to certain groups of people

Freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition

Right to bear arms

Due Process Clauses (FEDERAL), protection from self-incrimination, no double jeopardy

Government cannot infringe on someone carrying out their religious practices → Wisconsin v. Yoder
Establishment Clause:
Government cannot establish a national religion → Engel v. Vitale
De facto segregation
De facto: fact/reality that people naturally separate themselves
De jure segregation
De jure: segregation forced by law (Example: Jim Crows)
