National Interest
Countries make choices to help themselves. These choices change depending on what’s happening. They focus on money and jobs, safety, and beliefs and culture
Economic Prosperity
Making sure people have jobs and can buy what they need.
Security & Safety
Keeping people safe from danger.
Peacekeeping
Soldiers stand in the middle to stop fights.
Peacemaking
Soldiers fight when needed, not just to defend themselves.
Beliefs & Values
Protecting what people believe in and their way of life.
Arctic Sovereignty
Some countries (like Canada, the U.S., and Russia) want to own parts of the Arctic because there are treasures like oil, gold, and a new path for boats.
Russia’s Claim (2007)
Russia put a flag under the Arctic Ocean to say, “This is ours!” but other countries disagreed.
Ocean Rules (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea)
There are rules about who owns parts of the ocean.
International Waters
After a certain distance from land, no one owns the water.
Seabed Authority
A group that checks if a country can have more ocean land.
Government Policy
A country’s plan to make good choices for the future.
