Encomendero
A Spanish settler who was rewarded for settling the New World with slave labor of Native Americans
Encomienda System
A labor system that required Native Americans to work for Spanish settlers. They harvested cash crops and mined gold
Plantation
A large farm that usually uses slave labor to harvest cash crops
Triangular Trade
A trade route involving Europe who trade manufactured goods, Africa traded slaves, and the Americas trade raw materials for slaves
Indentured Servant
A poor European man who signed a contract to work on a New World plantation in exchange for passage to the New World and food/shelter.
Oppression
A group or person who abuses their power to control or mistreat a less powerful group or person
Diaspora
The spread of a large group of people away from their homeland to other areas
Columbian Exchange
The exchange of goods, foods, ideas, and diseases from the New World to the Old World
Gold, God, Glory
The main reason that Europeans crossed the Atlantic Ocean in voyages of discovery between 1492-1750

Colony
A place where a group of people come to settle that is under control by their original country
Mercantilism
The idea that colonies exist for the sole purpose of serving the mother country

A language or culture that is a mix of different languages or cultures. Developed in New Orleans and Jamaica where Africans, Native Americans, and Europeans lived closely together
Cash crop
A plant grown for the sole purpose of selling to make profit
Active resistance
A way of fighting slavery that was obvious and violent. Ex: running away or starting a riot
