Unit 3 Flashcards
Why is SA:V important for plants?
important to photosynthesis because plants must balance their need for more surface area to collect sunlight with the fragile nature of the leaves and the rate of water loss.
Why is SA:V important for animals?
Animals exposed to cold temperatures in their natural environment are able to survive and flourish due to their better insulation and ability to retain heat. Animals in cooler climates tend to be larger because their small surface-area to volume (SA/V) ratio cause them to lose heat at a lower rate
How do animals modify SA:V to better acquire
resources?
Mammal Vs. Amphibian heart allows for blood pressure and o2 levels
How do plants modify SA:V to better acquire
resources?
Leave size impact ability to photosynthesis. C4 plants have larger surface area to adapt to warmer climates.
osmoconformer
organisms that keep their internal fluids isotonic to their environment
osmoregulator
organisms that actively regulate their osmotic pressure, independent of the surrounding environment
Thermoregulator
a regulator for automatically regulating temperature by starting or stopping the supply of heat
thermoconformer
an animal that permits its body temperature to fluctuate with, and is about equal to, environmental temperature
heterothermy
a physiological term for animals that vary between self-regulating their body temperature, and allowing the surrounding environment to affect it.
countercurrent heat exchangers
In a countercurrent heat exchanger, the hot fluid becomes cold, and the cold fluid becomes hot
