Epic Hero
Hint: The Odyssey: Odious - he is given help by the gods to return home
The main character of an epic poem that tells the story of a grand quest in which they use their extraordinary abilities or superhuman abilities to achieve great things.
Deus ex Machina “God from the Machine”
Hint: Someone dying and coming back to life
a person or thing that appears or is introduced into a situation suddenly unexpectedly and provides an artificial or contrived solution to an apparently insoluble difficulty
Archetype
Hint: Joesph Campbell - The Hero’s With A Thousand Faces
a collectively inherited unconscious idea, pattern of thought, image, etc., universally present in individuals’ psyches.
Foil
Hint: disney show Liv and Maddie
a character who contrasts with another character in order to highlight qualities of the other character.
Fallen Hero
used to be a hero before “doing a 180” or “crossing over to the dark side”
Anti - Hero
the main character of a story, but one who doesn’t act like a typical hero.
Hubris
a personality quality of having a extreme or excessive pride
Hamartia/Tragic Flaw
a flaw in character that brings about the downfall of the hero of a tragedy
Tragic Hero
a person of noble birth with heroic or potentially heroic qualities. This person is fated by the Gods or by some supernatural force to doom and destruction or at least to great suffering.
Classic Hero
a character who possesses a great talent or ability that separates them from the rest of their contemporaries.
Internal Conflict
occurs when a character in literature experiences tension within themselves.
External Conflict
a type of literary conflict in which the protagonist has to struggle against other characters (called antagonists), nature, or society.
