Unit 3 Flashcards
Universal symbol
Symbols can be understood in many different cultures (ex. Skull and crossbones meaning danger).
Cultural symbol
These symbols are tied to the situation they are used in. Outside of that situation these symbols may lose their meaning.
Symbolic action
Actions that carry a deeper meaning and help us concretely, or physically, express our beliefs, values, and deepest concerns, e.g. walking down the street in a parade or protest march.
Practical action
Actions performed only for specific, practical purposes and do not have deeper significance, e.g. walking down one street or another to get to school.
Ritual
Rituals are symbolic actions that help us to physically express our beliefs and values.
Symbol
Symbols reveal a non-perceptible (we can’t directly see it) order or truth through a perceptible figure/object.
Describe the 5 different forms of prayer:
Blessing/adoration - The prayer of blessing is man’s response to God’s gifts because God blesses us.
Petition - The act of asking God for those things needed for life and living (Ex. for our needs of health and strength as Christians.
Intercession - Intercessory prayer is the act of one person praying for or on behalf of another person or situation.
Thanksgiving - The result of a grateful heart. We are grateful for Jesus Christ, the joy and wonder of life, the gifts we have and for persons in our lives.
Praise - Prayer is praise that gives God glory simply because HE IS.
Contemplation (meditation)
Contemplative prayer is nothing else than a close sharing between friends. This focus on Jesus purifies our heart; the light of Jesus illuminates the eyes of our heart and teaches us to see everything in the light of his truth and his compassion for everyone.
Lectio Divina (meditation)
Is a meditation upon the word of God, where we read the word of God slowly. Lectio Divina is very slow, and meditative. It’s not speed reading the word of God.
Examen (meditation)
The daily examen is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day in order to detect God’s presence. This is a version of the five-step daily Examen that St. Ignatius practiced.
Become aware of God’s presence.
Review the day with gratitude.
Pay attention to your emotions.
Choose one feature of the day and pray from it.
Look toward tomorrow.
Taize
The form of prayer known as Taize, began with the Taize Community in France. It is an ecumenical Christian community of more than 100 brothers, living in community. The prayers consist of “short cants, repeated again and again” according to an introduction in a Taize songbook. “The words are sung over many times.”
Visio Divina (meditation)
This is the process of reflecting on a piece of art (usually sacred art).
