Unit 3 Flashcards
Define a Mineral
A naturally made, inorganic solid that has a crystal structure and a definite chemical composition
List the five required characteristics of all minerals
(5)
- Formed naturally
- Can’t come from a living thing (inorganic)
- A solid
- Repeating patterns that line up to make a crystal
- Has a definite chemical composition
Streak
color of the minerals powder
Luster
How light reflects off the mineral
Density
Characteristic density (d=m/v)
Cleavage
How easily it breaks on a surface
Fracture
when it breaks in a odd way
Hardness
Using mohs hardness scale, scale rocks ten minerals from softest to hardest
Crystal system
Organization of crystals atoms
Identify and describe the characteristics used to identify minerals (8)
- Color
- Streak
- Luster
- Density
- Cleavage
- Fracture
- Hardness
- Crystal system
Define Crystallization
Process which atoms are arranged to form a material with a crystal structure
Describe how minerals form
Minerals can be formed as hot magma cools inside a crust
When elements and compounds that are dissolved in water and leave a solution
Igneous rock
Created when magma or lava cools and crystalizes
Sedimentary rock
rock material that forms where rocks are broken down into smaller pieces or dissolved in water as rocks erode or remains of plants and animals pressed together.
Metamorphic rock
when an existing rock is changed by heat and pressure
