Unit 3 Flashcards
What is the test for hydrogen?
It burns with a pop
What is the reaction for metals and water?
Reactive metal + water → metal hydroxide + hydrogen
What is the reaction for metals and acids?
Metal + acid → salt + hydrogen
What is the reaction for metals and oxygen?
Metal + oxygen → metal oxide
How do we produce a higher voltage in a cell?
Use metals that are further apart on the electrochemical series, the further apart, the higher the voltage.
What is the purpose of an ion bridge?
To complete the circuit.
What is electricity?
Electricity is a how of electrons that travel along a wire.
How is electricity created in a cell, and why is it a disadvantage?
Electricity in a cell is made by chemical reactions. This is a disadvantage because the chemicals used in the reactions run out after time.
What direction do the electrons flow?
From the most reactive metal to the least.
What is the purpose on an electrolyte?
To complete the circuit (eg. Ammonium chloride)
What is oxidation?
When substances lose electrons
What is reduction?
When substances gain electrons.
What is electrolysis?
The breaking up of an ionic solution using electricity
