Unit 2 Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound made up of only hydrogen and carbon
What is a homologous series?
A family of hydrocarbons with similar chemical properties, that can be represented by a general formula.
What happens as the chain of carbons increase in length?
The longer the chain, the more intermolecular bonds form, resulting in higher boiling points and melting points but lower flammability.
What is the general formula of alkanes?
CnH2n+2
What is the general formula for alkanes?
CnH2n
What are alkanes used for?
To make polymers and alcohols
What are cycloalkanes used for?
They are used as solvents and fuels
What is the general formula for cycloalkanes?
Cn H2n
What does saturated mean?
Saturated hydrocarbons contain single carbon-carbon bonds only.
Which homologous series is the most reactive?
Alkenes, unlike alkanes and cycloalkanes are unsaturated (have double bonds), making them the most reactive.
What is an addition reaction?
The addition of a molecule over a double bond.
What is an isomer?
A compound that has the same molecular formula, but a different structural formula.
What are alcohols?
A family of compounds with a functional group (-OH)
What is the general formula of alcohols?
Cn H2n+ 1 OH
What happens when an alcohol molecule increases in size?
The melting and boiling point increases due the increasing strength of intermolecular bonds.
