Unit 2b - Enzymes + Genetics Flashcards
How do animals use the energy released by aerobic respiration?
To build up larger molecules from smaller ones and allow muscles to contract
In which three places in the body is amylase produced?
Mouth, pancreas and small intestine
Why does the stomach produce hydrochloric acid?
Right pH for protease enzyme to work
Where is bile produced, stored and use?
Liver, gall bladder, small intestine
What is the equation for aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide water and energy
Glucose —> energy + lactic acid
Two enzymes used in biological washing powders?
Protease and lipase
Advantages of using enzymes in industry?
Lower temperatures and pressures needed saves money
After buying them they can be continually used
Disadvantages of using enzymes in industry?
Allergies to the enzymes can develop
The conditions have to be tightly controlled so the enzymes don’t denature
Where is DNA found?
In the nucleus of animal and plant cells in long molecules called chromosomes
What is a gene?
A section of DNA
