Metacognition
Thinking about thinking
concepts
mental groupings of similar objects/things
prototype
Mental image or best example of a category (ex. the doggiest dog)
Schema
A concept or framework that organizes and interprets information (ex. when you think of a house you imagine a something out of a kids book four window front door etc)
Assimilation
interpreting new experiences in terms of existing schemas (Ex. a kid who sees a new spieces a dog immedatidltly calls it a dog assimilating it to the existing concept / schema of cannines.)
Accomodation
adapting current schemas to incorporate new informartion
what does creativity require
expertise, imaginative thinking, venturesome personality, intristic motivation, creative enviorment
convergent thinking
Narrowing solution to determine the best one
divergent thinking
expanding possible solutions to a problem
functional fixedness ( tied in with divergent thinking)
Prior experiences inhibit ability to find creative solution ( people don’t first think that you can use a wrench to put a nail in wood only a hammer)
Algorithms (Problem solving)
Guarantee solution, time consuming, more precise (Baking)
Heuristics
Short cuts, simple thinking strategy, can be correct (cooking)
insight
Sudden realization of the solution to the problem
Confirmation bias
Only paying attention to information that validates your views and ignoring what doesnt
Fixation
Inability to see a problem from a new perspective
