Unit 2.2-2.3 Flashcards
What does cross-section show us?
Cross-section shows us the shape and height of the land
How to find the vertical exaggeration
The vertical scale divided by the horizontal scale. the vertical scale is found from the cross-section and the horizontal scale is found on the map. you have to change them both to a representative fraction before calculating
What is a slope?
A slope is an inclined ground surface
How can you find the steepness of a slope?
The steepness of a slope can be found by checking the spacing of the contour lines or calculating the slope gradient
How to check the steepness of a slope with contour lines
If the contour lines are wide apart, that means it’s a gentle slope however, if the contour lines are closely packed, it means that it is a steep slope
What is the formula of finding the gradient?
Vertical distance divided by the horizontal distance. you take the Y index of a triangle and you divided by the X index of the triangle then you have to make it equal to one over X and find X
How can you check the steepness of a slope by the slope gradient?
The larger, the ratio of the slope gradient, the steeper the slope
