cloture
a process where 60 senators vote to break a hold/debate on a bill and vote on it
hold
when a senator temporarily blocks the consideration of the bill or nomination
discharge petition
When a member of the House asks to have a bill that’s been discussed by a committee to be brought to the floor.
If a majority of the members agree, the bill will leave the committee.
budget deficit
when the national government’s spending goes over the budget
logrolling
when members of Congress promise to vote for each other’s bill proposals by putting all those proposals into one large bill, which they vote for
very similiar to an omnibus, which is a large bill containing many different statutes
filibuster
when a member of the Senate stands on the floor as long as possible in order to keep Senate from voting on a bill
This is probably one of the most hiliarious parts of american government
Fun facts:
* the longest filibuster was made by Republican Strom Thurmand: 24 hours and 18 minutes in length, in opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1957
* former senator Ted Cruz read Green Eggs and Ham during his 21+ hour filibuster

when state legislatures create (very) oddly shaped districts to get their party a majority vote in that district

when state legislatures redraw their state’s district lines; making new districts
