Amendments you need to know for the AP exam
1st amendment
- freedom of speech
- freedom of religion
- freedom of the press
- freedom of assembly
- right to petition
clauses in bold are required knowledge by the College Board
Important clauses:
* Freedom of speech clause
* Free exercise clause
* Freedom of press clause
2nd amendment
right to bear arms
3rd amendment
no quartering troops without homeowner’s consent
4th amendment
no search/seizure without a warrant
5th amendment
right to remain silent; no self-incrimination
6th amendment
right to an attorney; right to a fair/speedy trial
7th amendment
right to an unbiased jury
8th amendment
no cruel/unusual punishments
9th amendment
there are more rights than listed in the Bill of Rights
10th amendment
reserved powers go to the states
11th amendment
prohibits federal courts from hearing cases in which a state is sued by an individual from another state or another country
set to 5 if you dont care for it

13th amendment
Abolished slavery
14th amendment
No state can create laws that abridge the rights of its citizens by due process of the law and must give all citizens equal protection
Important clauses:
* Equal Protection Clause (EPC)
* Due Process Clause of the 14th amendment (DPC)
15th amendment
The government can’t take away the right to vote based on race
Gave African-Americans the right to vote
17th amendment
Senators are voted for directly by voters, no longer state legislatures
