What are the functions of the skeletal system?

  1. Support: holding up the body, scaffolding for organs and muscles to attach to
  2. Protection: skull protects the brain, thoracic cage protects the heart and lungs, etc.
  3. Leverage for Movement: muscles contract to pull on bones
  4. Mineral Storage: stores and releases calcium and phosphate as needed
  5. Energy Storage: yellow bone marrow in bone cavities stores fat
  6. Hemapoeisis: red bone marrow in bone cavities produces red and white blood cells and platelets
  7. pH balance: helps regulate pH in the blood by absorbing bicarbonate ions
