What are the functions of the skeletal system?

- Support: holding up the body, scaffolding for organs and muscles to attach to
- Protection: skull protects the brain, thoracic cage protects the heart and lungs, etc.
- Leverage for Movement: muscles contract to pull on bones
- Mineral Storage: stores and releases calcium and phosphate as needed
- Energy Storage: yellow bone marrow in bone cavities stores fat
- Hemapoeisis: red bone marrow in bone cavities produces red and white blood cells and platelets
- pH balance: helps regulate pH in the blood by absorbing bicarbonate ions
